[Malta] The Independent: Malta to host European Asylum Support Office

Malta has won its bid to host the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), which will be housed in a building used by the Malta Maritime Authority along Grand Harbour in Marsa. EU justice and home affairs ministers unanimously agreed on Malta’s bid to host the EASO during a Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Brussels yesterday.

[Israel] Haaretz: Proper treatment of refugees

Israel is contending with a wave of migrants from Africa, particularly Sudan and Eritrea, entering its territory through Egypt. There are currently around 17,500 African refugees and asylum seekers in Israel who want recognition under the international treaty prohibiting their return to their countries of origin, where they might face persecution, torture or death by execution. Most of the migrants entered Israel's Negev via the border with Sinai in the past three years.

[Egypt] UN: Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review - 7th session

The Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism urged the Government to lift the state of emergency and repeal the Emergency Law, including all decrees issued under it, with a view to restoring the rule of law and full compliance with human rights. While acknowledging the right of a State to proclaim a state of emergency as a temporary measure determined by the exigencies of the situation and reiterating that terrorism as a phenomenon should in principle be combated through ordinary penal legislation.

[Italie/Tunisie] FTCR: Verdict dans l'affaire des pécheurs d'Agrigente

Le Tribunal d’Agrigente (Sicile, Italie) a prononcé le mercredi 18 novembre 2009 la relaxe des hommes d’équipage des navires tunisiens Mortadha et Mohammed-el-Hedi de l'accusation d' "aide à l'immigration clandestine". Les sept pêcheurs tunisiens étaient poursuivis pour avoir secouru 44 migrants sur le point de chavirer en pleine mer dans le canal de Sicile et de les avoir En revanche, et en opérant un retournement très grave, le Tribunal a prononcé une peine de deux ans et demi de prison à l’encontre de Abdelkarim Bayoudh et Abdelbaset El Jenzri, capitaines des navires Mortadha et Mohammed-el-Hedi pour "Non obtempération aux ordres des gardes cotes italiens", "résistance à officiers de la sécurité publique" et "menaces de violences à l'encontre d'un bâtiment militaire".

[Belgique] RTBF: Un camp de réfugiés au cœur de Bruxelles

Un camp de réfugiés s'installe au cœur de la capitale européenne, la veille d'un sommet de marchandages dont l'Union européenne a le secret. La Belgique, faute de place, ne peut plus accueillir les demandeurs d'asile. Ou plutôt faute de volonté politique. A ce jour, plus de 1000 demandeurs doivent dormir dehors.
