The border between Morocco and the Spanish exclave of Melilla has become a focal point for immigration from Syria and sub-Saharan Africa.
Melilla is one of only two land borders the EU shares with Africa, and thousands of migrants attempt the perilous journey each year. In November, Spain reinstated a 12km-long fence to deter illegal incomers, a move condemned by human rights groups.
The barbed-wire barrier was first introduced in 2005 but had been partially removed after causing serious injuries. Migrants who manage to scale the fence and evade capture often go on to attempt the treacherous boat journey to the mainland.
