Amid fears that an influx of Palestinian refugees may shift the demographic balance in Jordan towards the Palestinians, the government has been turning away Palestinians at the Syrian border, according to international agencies.
Around half of Jordan’s population is of Palestinian origins and, with over 2 million refugees registered in the Kingdom, the country hosts the largest number of displaced Palestinians, according to UNRWA.
“Palestinians should be welcomed everywhere in the region as they are already refugees from the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and the 1967 Middle East war," Michael Kingsley-Nyinah, the director of UNRWA in Syria, told The Jordan Times.
