A Doctors of the World (Médecins du Monde) report on healthcare across Europe, released on 9 April 2013, finds that national health systems are failing to adequately meet the needs of vulnerable people.
Based on data collected from consultations with over 8,000 patients in seven countries, the report says that austerity measures are having a profound negative effect on social protection schemes, including healthcare.
‘As healthcare professionals we are demanding our right to provide healthcare to all patients, regardless of their social status or ethnic origin,' says Leigh Daynes, Executive Director of Doctors of the World UK. 'We want our national public health systems to remove the barriers to medical care faced by the most vulnerable.’
