21.11.2012. Anmar al-Hmoud, media
spokesperson of the Higher Committee for Syrian refugee affairs in Jordan, said
there are now approximately 230,000 Syrian refugees in the kingdom, around
100,000 of whom are officially registered with the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Six months ago, the number of officially
registered refugees was 22,000.
The government is encouraging refugees to
register with the UNHCR so they can enrol their children in schools and gain
access to health care, shelter and food, thus easing the burden on Jordan,
al-Hmoud said in a press statement last week. He called on donor countries to help
alleviate the negative effects the swelling number of refugees have on
Jordanian municipalities and cities.
The
Jordanian government and United Nations agencies in August also called on the
international community to help Jordan provide the necessary services to
displaced Syrians.
