Malta and Italy agreed that the remit of Frontex should be the repatriation of irregular migrants who did not qualify for refugee or humanitarian status, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici said. Addressing a press conference with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg on their return from a bilateral summit in Italy with their counterparts, Dr Mifsud Bonnici said Malta and Italy agreed that the Mediterranean countries most affected by migration flows should re-assess Frontex’s role – but that Malta will not reconsider its decision not to take part in the Frontex patrols.
