On 2 January, the Spanish Refugee Council (Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado (CEAR)), called on the Spanish government to suspend the cooperation on migration issues with Morocco. This call follows the death of a migrant that has been killed by the police after trying to cross irregularly the frontier at Melilla, an autonomous Spanish city located on the Moroccan coast. CEAR stresses that border management should never lead to human right violations, such as the right to life.Furthermore, asylum applications in Madrid airport decreased by 60% in 2008 compared to 2007. CEAR expresses its concerns that this decrease is mainly due to the lack of access to the procedure.
