[Cyprus] InCyprus - Cyprus directly affected by illegal immigration



Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos stressed that Cyprus is one of the EU member states which is directly affected by illegal immigration. In an intervention at the EU Council of Justice and Home Affairs which took place in Luxembourg, Hasikos said that there is need for joint action to solve problems such as immigration. The solidarity principle and burden sharing, he added, must be implemented.
Cyprus, he went on to say, is an EU member state which is directly affected by illegal immigration. In this context, he recalled that Cyprus rescued last month 345 Syrian refugees who found shelter on the island.
The Ministerial Council focused on immigration, asylum and external border issues.
