[REPORT Italy- Strait of Sicily] Borderline Europe - Rescue at sea: the situtation in the Sicilian Strait

Borderline Europe comes back in a detailed report on the situation of migrants crossing the Mediterranean through the Strait of Sicily. It dwells on the information gathered on the Mare Nostrum operation launched in October 2013 after the tragic shipwrecks that saw over 600 people die.

What happened since the launch of Mare Nostrum? As stated by Borderline Europe:
"Mare Nostrum is rescuing lives, but at the same time it is a military operation to protect the Italian sea frontiers. This operation involves five Navy vessels, two helicopters, two airplanes, radar systems and 920 marines." (p.2)

The report dwells on this ambiguous and problematic positioning by giving concrete examples of migrants who have been "rescued" at sea by the Italian authorities.
