Applications for EU asylum doubled in 2013 compared to the previous year according to data by the UN High Commission for Refugees released on March 11.

Since the conflict in Syria begun in early 2011 the EU’s 28 member states have received a total of 76,373 new asylum applications of Syrians the UNHCR says.

The number of Syrians arriving to the European Union, Norway and Switzerland seeking international protection has increased in 2013, although it remains comparatively low, as less than 4% of Syrians who have fled the conflict have sought safety in Europe, the organisation ads.
