28 people from Afghanistan and Syria was on a boat trying to reach Greek coast (Pharmakonisi Isl.), when the Greek coast guard actually pushed them back to Turkey coast. On the way, the boat capsized and people felt in the sea. 16 of them were rescued, 2 found dead and the rest 10 people are missing. The survivors for the moment are in the island of Leros.
“UNHCR is urging the authorities to investigate this incident and how lives were lost on a boat that was under tow,” said Laurens Jolles, UNHCR’s Southern Europe Regional Representative. “In addition survivors need to be quickly moved to the mainland so that their needs can be better looked after.”
