The influx came amid a rare break in Damascus’ 10-week aerial offensive across southern Syria, with rebel officials and Jordanian security sources reporting minor clashes in two border towns.
“Today, the situation along the border was calm, and hundreds of families tried to take advantage of that and flee to Jordan,” said Mohammad Al Naimi, a Free Syrian Army coordinator for refugee crossings based in the outskirts of Tal Shihab.
Many of Tuesday’s arrivals were some of an estimated 25,000 displaced civilians who have been prevented from crossing into Jordan over the past two months due to border fighting.
