“We have never stopped receiving Syrian refugees who have been escaping the violence in their country and seeking safe haven in the Kingdom since the crisis in their country started over two years ago. We deal with this issue in accordance with international humanitarian covenants,” said Momani, who is also minister of state for media affairs and communications.
Jordan has opened its borders to over 560,000 Syrians since the onset of the conflict in March 2011 — a number that UN agencies predict will exceed 1.3 million by the end of the year.
The Amnesty International statement called on authorities not to deny entry to anyone fleeing the armed conflict in neighbouring Syria, alleging that families with young children were among scores of people forced to wait at the border in recent days.
