26.11.2012. The main destinations for Syrian refugees are the bordering countries of Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. In the last three months alone the number of refugees registering with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in these countries has doubled, to a staggering total of over 300,000 individuals.
Increasingly though, refugees have ended up in Egypt. The latest UNHCR figure for registered Syrians in Egypt is 7,728 but the Egyptian government recently estimated the number of Syrian refugees to be 150,000. The UNHCR in Egypt said the government figure matches up with its own estimates.
