[EU] ENPI: EU steps up efforts on resettlement of refugees

The European Commission has unveiled plans to streamline the resettlement of refugees into Member States through its ‘Joint EU Resettlement Programme’. A press release said the programme aimed to develop resettlement within the EU into a more effective instrument to give protection to refugees, providing for closer political and practical cooperation among EU Member States. The programme concerns only the resettlement of refugees currently living outside the EU – many of them in the Middle East (Syria alone hosts 1.1 million refugees) – and is separate from proposals aimed at easing transfers of refugees from one EU member state to another.
