[Egypt] OUNHCHR: Committee on Migrant Workers - Civil Society Contribution

The Hotline for Migrant Workers

The report is based on exclusive information gathered directly from Egyptians detainees by volunteers of the Hotline for Migrant Workers. During 2006 we received calls from 32 Egyptians detainees (out of a total of 4100 callers). Volunteers provided callers with basic information on their rights and contact information for relevant agencies.

Comments on Egypt’s Report to the Committee By Tarek Badawy

In the report, there was reference to several articles of the Egyptian constitution. It is important to be aware of the fact that there are several proposed constitutional amendments at this stage. One of these amendments involves article 151. This article is probably the most crucial as far as international conventions are concerned for it governs the process of national codification and implementation of international law.

National Council for Human Rights

Egypt concluded many Arab and international treaties aiming at protecting the rights and freedoms of the Egyptian labor force abroad. Even though there are numerous violations facing Egyptians abroad, denoting the larger phenomena of worldwide migrant labor rights violations.
